"Beauty" and "The Beast"

Angela Carter's The Courtship of Mr Lyon and The Tiger's Bride are both based on the fairy tale of The Beauty and the Beast.
Influences/other:
Carter translated Charles Perrault's stories as well as Marquis de Sade (after whom sadism was named)

x Cupid and Psyche (2nd century AD)
similar to: perseus and andromeda, st george
CUPID = The Body

Bow + arrow
(gold tipped = love, lead tipped = hate)
A blind cupid symbolically means a purely lust based relationship

PSYCHE = The Soul
Two older sisters - i.e. Psyche is "The youngest"

The Plot:

  2. Tie out psyche as a sacrifice to the beast to stop it + save country

  7. Her sisters proceed to make fun of the dainty psyche because she cant see the guy, and they're like omg he must be well uggers to hide himself from you! and she like proper believes them and gets well scared.
  8. So in the night he's sleeping next to her and shes like BOOM BRING OUT A CANDLE AND SEE HIM and hes like ahh cause she spills some wax on him and the castle disappears because his mum is not pleased at all!
  9. Psyche is like hey venus I quite like your son really, can I still go out with him I like him a lot. Venus is like no you can't, get off. Well, unless you can do all these crazy trials like.. sand split from rice etc
  10. Psyche makes lots of animal friends which help her and eventually she finishes all of the trials and she becomes immortal and live happily ever after.

  3. Her challenge is that he has a year and a day to discover what women most want, if he gets it wrong she'll get his head chopped off.
  4. So the guy's walking around and gets all kinds of answers, and one day he sees a fairy circle and goes over to investigate
  5. the fairy circle turns into an old well uggers woman, who turns out to know exactly what women want, for a favour, she tells him.
  6. He goes back to the queen and tells her it is "POWER" (by which they have freedom)
  7. So the old woman comes in and is like- yeah my favour is that you marry me
  8. He gets into bed with her and cant get it up, and she mocks him, he says its cause youre pretty ugly and old and poor.
  9. She says old = wise, hes only rich because of his ancestors and ugly = ill not be raped or unfaithful
